Barclays is expanding its strategic collaboration with Anthropic to integrate secure, enterprise-grade AI systems across its global operations. The initiative aims to accelerate software development, modernize legacy systems, and improve operational efficiency within the British universal bank.

What Happened

As part of the rollout, Barclays expects Claude Code adoption to reach 50% of its developer population by the end of 2026, rising to a majority of software engineers in 2027. The bank is also deploying Claude through a retrieval-augmented generation architecture for its Colleague Knowledge Assistant, which has been live since 2025. This tool helps employees support over 20 million UK retail customers, with more than 16,000 colleagues having adopted the assistant to handle over one million searches.

In Barclays’ Global Markets business, Claude models are used to classify, enrich, and determine processing routes for incoming emails. This platform processes approximately 120,000 emails each day, reducing manual handling and helping colleagues identify relevant information more efficiently.

Why It Matters

This deal signals a shift in how major financial institutions approach AI integration, moving beyond experimental pilots to embedded operational infrastructure. By targeting a majority of its engineering workforce by 2027, Barclays is setting a competitive benchmark for AI-driven productivity in regulated industries. Anthropic’s Chief Commercial Officer, Paul Smith, positioned the partnership as a significant milestone in the UK, noting that very few institutions hold AI to such a high standard of security and oversight. This reinforces Anthropic’s positioning as the preferred partner for high-stakes enterprise environments where reliability outweighs raw capability metrics.

Barclays Group Co-Chief Operating Officer Anne Marie Darling emphasized that the goal is transforming work processes rather than just adopting technology, aiming to reduce routine activity time. Her counterpart, Craig Bright, noted that the combination of skilled engineers, cyber specialists, and AI capabilities is intended to fundamentally improve how technology is developed and managed at scale, addressing the critical need for modernizing legacy platforms in large-scale enterprises.

The Bottom Line

Barclays is scaling Claude across its organization to boost productivity and resilience, with specific targets for developer adoption set for 2026 and 2027. The bank continues to apply robust governance and human oversight to ensure responsible deployment across its global operations.
